Australian veterans express outrage after Donald Trump claims allied troops "stayed back" in Afghanistan, a statement termed "disgusting" by RSL President Peter Tinley.

A diplomatic firestorm has erupted between Washington and Canberra following disparaging remarks by former US President Donald Trump. In a shocking revision of history, Trump claimed that allied troops in Afghanistan "stayed a little back" from the frontlines, effectively accusing Australian soldiers of cowardice.
The comments have drawn a venomous response from the Returned and Services League (RSL) of Australia, with veterans describing the slur as "unfathomable" and "disgusting." The insult is particularly stinging given that Australia invoked the ANZUS treaty to join the US in Afghanistan immediately after the 9/11 attacks, a war that claimed 47 Australian lives.
RSL National President Peter Tinley, a former SAS commander who served in Afghanistan, did not mince words. "To denigrate the sacrifice of those who died wearing the Australian uniform is the height of ignorance," Tinley stated. "We were not 'back'; we were in the valleys of Uruzgan, shoulder to shoulder with US Marines. We bled together."
The row threatens to strain the historic alliance at a critical time. Analysts warn that Trump's "America First" rhetoric is rapidly mutating into "America Alone," alienating the very partners the US needs to counter rising threats in the Indo-Pacific. If the US cannot honor the blood sacrifice of its closest friends, the value of its security guarantees is effectively zero.
For the families of the 47 fallen Australians, the former President's words are more than just politics; they are a desecration of memory.
