Diplomatic relations between Kyiv and Budapest have collapsed after Ukraine accused Hungary of state terrorism, alleging the abduction of seven bank employees transporting $80 million through central Budapest.
Diplomatic relations between Kyiv and Budapest have imploded following shocking allegations by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister that Hungarian authorities have taken seven Ukrainian bank employees hostage.
The employees, who were reportedly transporting $80 million (approx. KES 10.4 billion) in cash for the state-owned Oschadbank, were intercepted in central Budapest. This extraordinary escalation threatens to sever Hungary entirely from the European Union's united front against Russian aggression.
The incident unfolded rapidly when GPS tracker data revealed that two armored bank vehicles, in transit between Austria and Ukraine, had been inexplicably halted and rerouted near a Hungarian law enforcement facility in Budapest.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha issued a blistering denunciation on social media, accusing the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban of outright criminality. "We are talking about Hungary taking hostages and stealing money," Sybiha stated. "If this is the 'force' that Viktor Orban spoke about today, then it is the force of a criminal organization. This is state terrorism and blackmail."
The state-owned Oschadbank has demanded the immediate return of its personnel and the seized assets. Despite official diplomatic notes dispatched from Kyiv, the Hungarian government has maintained a conspicuous and chilling silence on the matter.
This brazen act cannot be viewed in isolation. It is deeply intertwined with Hungary's increasingly hostile stance toward Ukraine and its overt alignment with Moscow. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has aggressively utilized his veto power within the EU to frustrate Kyiv’s war effort.
For international observers in Nairobi, the standoff illustrates the fragility of European alliances. The seizure of sovereign state assets by an EU member state in broad daylight represents an unprecedented breach of international law.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Ukraine will not be intimidated, hinting at potential retaliatory measures if the personnel are not released. The crisis places immense pressure on Brussels to rein in Budapest, a task they have thus far failed to accomplish.
If Hungary continues to operate as a rogue actor within the bloc, the structural integrity of the EU’s foreign policy apparatus may be irreparably damaged, granting Moscow a critical strategic victory.
"The weaponization of transit routes and the abduction of state personnel signals that Hungary has crossed the threshold from political obstructionist to an active saboteur of European security."
