Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially taken charge of the Jubilee Party, ending nearly three years of leadership wrangles and signalling a new phase for the outfit ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Nairobi, Kenya — September 26, 2025 (EAT).
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially taken charge of the Jubilee Party, ending nearly three years of leadership wrangles and signalling a new phase for the outfit ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Uhuru arrived at the National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at Ngong Racecourse in the company of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni. Party officials described the event as a “watershed moment” after a long period marked by attempted takeovers and internal factionalism.
“It’s Uhuru’s Day! Today, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta officially takes charge of the Jubilee Party, charting the way forward after nearly two and a half years of relentless battles following an attempted illegal takeover of the party,” Kioni told delegates.
Leadership battles: Since 2022, the Jubilee Party has faced court disputes and factional fights over leadership legitimacy, with rival groups attempting to oust Kioni and align Jubilee with the ruling coalition.
Political realignments: Jubilee was a key member of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition in the 2022 elections, backing ODM leader Raila Odinga. Its future role in opposition or government remains a subject of intense speculation.
Constitutional rights: Article 38 of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to participate in political activities, including forming, joining, or leading political parties.
Political Parties Act: Section 17 of the Act outlines requirements for internal democracy, party elections, and dispute resolution mechanisms, under which Jubilee has been navigating its leadership disputes.
Uhuru Kenyatta: While Uhuru did not issue a formal speech immediately upon arrival, his presence was described by aides as a “return to active party leadership” ahead of 2027 political plans.
Jeremiah Kioni, Secretary General: “This marks the end of illegitimate attempts to hijack the party. We now refocus on unity, grassroots rebuilding, and policy-driven politics,” he said.
Political analysts: Experts say Jubilee’s consolidation could influence opposition dynamics and future coalition-building efforts.
Court cases: At least three High Court petitions were filed since 2022 over Jubilee’s leadership, two of which affirmed Kioni’s position as Secretary General.
Membership: Jubilee claims over 1 million registered members across 47 counties, though active membership rolls have declined since the 2022 elections.
Political bargaining: A stronger Jubilee could tilt coalition talks ahead of 2027, either within Azimio or in new alignments.
Opposition unity: The move raises questions about Raila Odinga’s role, given ODM’s dominance in the Azimio coalition.
Internal dissent: Rival factions may still challenge the NDC resolutions in court.
