Provisional results from the IEBC show David Kiplangat of the United Democratic Alliance has secured a narrow victory in a hotly contested race marked by low voter turnout and accusations of voter intimidation.

David Kiplangat of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is the presumptive Member of Parliament for Lang'ata Constituency, according to provisional results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The political newcomer narrowly defeated ODM's Catherine Omanyo in a by-election that has been a focal point of national political tension.
This election was more than a local contest; it was a litmus test for the ruling UDA party's influence in a constituency historically loyal to the opposition. The outcome signals a potential shift in Nairobi's complex political landscape, directly impacting residents' access to the KES 150 million (approx. $1.15 million) Constituency Development Fund and shaping local development priorities for the next two years.
Despite a peaceful voting process, the exercise was characterized by significantly low voter participation across most polling stations. By midday, many centres reported that less than 20% of registered voters had cast their ballots. Analysts attribute the apathy to voter fatigue and a growing disillusionment with political promises, a trend seen in other recent by-elections across the country.
The IEBC confirmed that polling stations opened at 6:00 AM EAT and closed at 5:00 PM EAT, with the KIEMS biometric system functioning smoothly in most areas. However, isolated incidents of alleged voter bribery and intimidation were reported in several wards, prompting the National Police Service to enhance security patrols to ensure order.
The IEBC's online portal, which provides real-time updates, presented the following provisional results from all 188 polling stations:
In his victory speech at the constituency tallying centre, Kiplangat pledged to unite the community. "This is not my victory, but a win for all the people of Lang'ata," he declared. "It is time to move beyond party lines and focus on delivering services, from improving our schools to ensuring our markets are safe and clean."
The ODM party has yet to issue a formal statement, though sources within the party have indicated they are reviewing their agents' signed forms before conceding. The seat fell vacant after the previous MP, Felix Odiwuor, was appointed as a foreign envoy three months ago.
As Lang'ata awaits the official gazettement of its new representative, all eyes are on how this result will recalibrate political strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
