Rescue operations continue in the dark waters off Basilan as families wait for news of the missing passengers from the ill-fated M/V Trisha Kerstin 3.

The dark waters of the Celebes Sea have claimed yet another ferry, leaving at least 15 people dead and dozens of families in agonizing limbo. The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, a passenger vessel teeming with over 350 souls, capsized and sank shortly after midnight while navigating the route from Zamboanga City to Jolo Island. The disaster has once again highlighted the perilous nature of maritime travel in the archipelago nation.
As dawn broke over the island province of Basilan, the scale of the tragedy became clear. Philippine Coast Guard vessels, aided by local fishermen, pulled 300 shivering survivors from the ocean, but for 15 others, help came too late. The search continues for the remaining missing passengers, with hope fading with every passing hour.
Survivors recount a terrifying scene of chaos in the dead of night. The ferry, which officials claim was not overloaded, reportedly encountered "technical problems" before listing heavily and taking on water. "The lights went out, and then the screaming started," said one survivor, now recovering in a hospital in Isabela City. "People were jumping into the black water without life jackets. It was every man for himself."
Governor Mujiv Hataman of Basilan Province confirmed the casualties, stating that local hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured. The incident occurred near Baluk-baluk Island, a treacherous stretch of water known for strong currents.
This tragedy is painfully familiar in the Philippines, where ferries are the backbone of transport but safety standards are often lax.
As the recovery teams continue their grim work, questions will be asked about how a vessel could sink in what were reported to be "good weather conditions." But for the victims, the answers will not bring back the lives lost in the unforgiving depths of the sea.
