Brussels hits back at Trump’s ‘blackmail’ tariffs, suspending ratification of major pact to protect territorial integrity.

The European Parliament has formally suspended the ratification of a major trade agreement with the United States, effectively declaring a diplomatic war in response to President Trump's aggressive tariff threats over Greenland.
In a move described by insiders as a "nuclear deterrent," Brussels has refused to be bullied into ceding Danish territory. The suspension comes days after Trump threatened a 10% tariff on EU exports unless the bloc acquiesced to his purchase of Greenland—a demand European leaders have branded as "blackmail" and a violation of sovereignty.
Bernd Lange, head of the EU Parliament's trade committee, was unequivocal: "There will be no possibility for compromise." The stakes are astronomical. The now-frozen deal promised to eliminate tariffs on billions of dollars of industrial goods. Instead, the EU is preparing a retaliatory package worth €93 billion (approx. KES 14 trillion), targeting iconic US products.
A trade war between the world's two largest economic blocs spells trouble for developing economies. Kenya, which exports significantly to both the EU (flowers, horticulture) and the US (textiles under AGOA), could find itself caught in the crossfire of fluctuating currencies and dampened global demand. A stronger dollar, driven by uncertainty, could hike Kenya's import bill for fuel and machinery.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has returned to Brussels to war-game the next steps. The message is stark: Europe chooses integrity over profit, setting the stage for a bruising economic winter.
