China is pressuring European nations to ban Taiwanese politicians by claiming their visits violate EU border laws, a new "lawfare" tactic to isolate the island democracy.

A covert diplomatic offensive by the People's Republic of China has been exposed. Leaked documents and diplomatic sources reveal that Beijing is aggressively pressuring European governments to deny visas to Taiwanese politicians, weaponizing the EU's own border laws to isolate the island democracy.
The campaign involves demarches sent to European foreign ministries, warning them not to "trample on China's red lines." Chinese officials are using a novel legal argument: they claim that under the Schengen Borders Code, granting entry to Taiwanese officials constitutes a "threat to international relations," a clause usually reserved for terrorists or spies.
"It is a sophisticated form of lawfare," explains Zsuzsa Anna Ferenczy, a Taiwan-EU relations expert. "Beijing is interpreting European law to suit its One China principle. They are effectively telling sovereign nations that inviting a democratically elected leader from Taiwan is a hostile act."
The revelation puts the EU in a bind. While Brussels officially adheres to the One China policy, it also maintains robust "unofficial" ties with Taipei, a key supplier of semiconductors. succumbing to this pressure would amount to a significant surrender of sovereignty over border control. As tensions in the Taiwan Strait rise, the battle for legitimacy is moving from the seas to the visa counters.
