Pioneering gay footballer Josh Cavallo accuses his former club Adelaide United of sidelining him due to homophobia, alleging he was mocked by teammates and frozen out by management.

Josh Cavallo, the footballer who made history in 2021 as the first openly gay player in a top-flight men's league, has broken his silence on his departure from Adelaide United. In a scathing Instagram post that has sent shockwaves through the sporting world, Cavallo alleged that he was forced out of the club not because of his performance, but due to "internal homophobia."
Cavallo, who now plays for Stamford AFC, claimed that despite the club's public "Pride Cup" initiatives, the locker room culture remained toxic. "It is hard to swallow when I realized my own club was homophobic," he wrote. "I was angry because people thought I was sidelined based on injuries, when in reality, it was internal politics that kept me on the bench."
The accusations are specific and damning. Cavallo alleges that teammates shared photos of him and his partner in group chats, subjecting them to ridicule while management turned a blind eye. "For the first time, I actually questioned if I should have kept my sexuality a secret," he confessed, highlighting the immense psychological toll of being a pioneer in a hyper-masculine environment.
Cavallo’s decision to speak out is a high-risk move that could alienate him further within the professional fraternity. However, he insists he owes the truth to the fans and the next generation of queer athletes. "I will not let my silence protect their comfort," he declared.
