A smooth-talking conman masquerading as a consular official shatters the hopes of dozens of job seekers, leaving a trail of empty bank accounts and tears in a scandal that exposes the desperation of Kenya’s jobless.

They were promised the maple leaf dream: lucrative jobs and a new life in Canada. Instead, dozens of Kenyans have been left destitute, swindled out of a staggering Sh51 million by Brian Reeves Obare, a man who played the role of a "Canadian Embassy official" with Oscar-worthy conviction.
This case, now unfolding before Magistrate Paul Mutai at the Milimani Law Courts, is a damning indictment of the exploitation of hope in an economy where youth unemployment has reached crisis levels. It reveals a sophisticated network of deceit that operates in the shadows of Nairobi's gleaming towers, preying on the desperation of families willing to sell land and livestock for a chance at a better life.
Witnesses told the court how Obare, smooth-talking and impeccably dressed, held court at Embassy House in the CBD, convincing victims he was a high-ranking consular official. "He had the jargon, he had the papers, he even had the confidence," testified Lidia Nyagala of Golden Key Travel Consultants. "We never suspected he was a fraud until our clients were arrested at the airport."
The scam was meticulous. Obare collected passports, birth certificates, and "biometrics fees," charging Sh450,000 per head. He even issued fake visa approvals that looked identical to the real thing. But when the hopeful travelers arrived at JKIA, the dream turned into a nightmare.
The scandal raises serious questions about vetting in the recruitment sector. How could a lone wolf operate a multi-million shilling scam in a government building for two years without detection? For the victims, justice is a distant hope; the money is gone, and so are their dreams.
"He sold us air," sobbed one victim outside the courtroom. "He looked me in the eye and promised me a future. Now I am grounded, broke, and broken."
