Minnesota and Illinois file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop aggressive ICE raids, escalating the conflict between Democratic states and the federal government over immigration policy.

The legal war against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown has officially begun. The Attorneys General of Minnesota and Illinois have filed a joint lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), seeking an emergency injunction to halt what they term "unconstitutional paramilitary operations" by ICE agents in their states.
The lawsuit comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent, an event that has sparked nationwide protests. Minnesota AG Keith Ellison described the administration’s tactics as a "reign of terror" designed to intimidate immigrant communities rather than enforce the law. "We will not allow federal agents to act as judge, jury, and executioner on our streets," Ellison declared.
The legal filing argues that the Trump administration is violating the Tenth Amendment by coercing state officials to participate in federal immigration enforcement. Both Minnesota and Illinois have "Sanctuary State" policies that limit cooperation with ICE. The White House has retaliated by threatening to withhold federal highway funds.
Legal scholars predict the case will fast-track to the Supreme Court. It pits state sovereignty against federal power in a battle that will define the limits of the presidency. For the millions of immigrants living in fear, the courtroom is now the last line of defense.
