From 'Keisha' to 'D'Andre', a new linguistic analysis explores how African-American naming conventions are shedding colonial baggage and finding humor, pride, and history.

From "Shaniqua" to "DeShawn," African-American names have long been the subject of comedy, confusion, and unfortunately, discrimination. But a new wave of cultural appreciation is flipping the script. What was once dismissed as "ghetto" is now being celebrated as a powerful assertion of identity, creativity, and resistance against erasure.
A recent viral thread titled "50+ Funniest Black Names" has sparked a deeper conversation than just laughs. While some entries highlight the sheer inventive hilarity of the community—names like "Lemonjello" (Lemon-Jello) or "Courvoisier"—experts say the phenomenon is rooted in a serious historical context. After being stripped of African names during slavery, Black Americans had to invent their own lexicon of identity.
Dr. M. Keith Claybrook Jr., a professor of Africana Studies, explains that these naming conventions often follow specific linguistic patterns that are melodious and meaningful:
For decades, studies showed that resumes with "Black-sounding" names were less likely to get callbacks. However, Gen Z is rejecting the code-switching. "My name is Keondra, and I’m not shortening it to 'Kay' for your comfort," says one viral TikTok user. "It means 'Goddess' and you will respect it."
While the humor in names like "Airwrecka" (Erica) is undeniable and embraced by the community itself, the underlying message is one of ownership. In a world that often tries to define Blackness, the act of naming a child something completely unique is the ultimate declaration of freedom. It says: "I am here, I am one of one, and you cannot ignore me."
