Kenya signs a labor mobility deal with the US State of Nebraska, creating legal job pathways for nurses, truck drivers, and students in a bid to boost diaspora remittances.

The "Hustler" dream of working abroad has received a major boost. The Kenyan government has signed a landmark labour mobility agreement with the US State of Nebraska, opening a structured pathway for Kenyan professionals to work in the American Midwest.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu and Nebraska Secretary of State Robert Evnen. Unlike vague promises of the past, this deal targets specific sectors facing acute labor shortages in the US: healthcare (nurses), transportation (truck drivers), and meat processing.
Nebraska, a key agricultural hub, is desperate for workers. The agreement formalizes recruitment, cutting out the middlemen who often fleece job seekers.
While the government celebrates the deal as a solution to unemployment and a boost for remittances (which hit KES 1.1 trillion last year), critics worry about the loss of skilled labor. "We are exporting our best nurses while our own hospitals are understaffed," noted a KMPDU official.
The Ministry has warned Kenyans to be wary of scammers. All recruitment will be handled through the National Employment Authority (NEA) portal. If someone asks for money for a "Nebraska slot" on WhatsApp, it is a scam.
