Prime Minister Keir Starmer defends his frequent foreign travel to Labour MPs, arguing that global engagement is essential to fixing the UK's domestic economic crisis.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced down critics within his own party who argue he is spending too much time abroad while Britons struggle with the cost of living. In a fiery address to the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) last night, Starmer insisted that "being in the room" is not a luxury, but an economic necessity.
Since taking office in July 2024, Starmer has made over 40 international trips. While his aides frame this as restoring the UK's standing after the isolationist Brexit years, backbenchers worry it looks like escapism. "You cannot pay the heating bill with a photo-op in Davos," one MP reportedly grumbled.
Starmer's defense connects the foreign to the domestic. He argued that the cost-of-living crisis is fueled by global instability—wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and supply chain shocks. "We cannot solve inflation by hiding in Westminster," he told MPs. "We must be on the pitch, securing trade deals for Jaguar Land Rover and defense pacts that lower energy prices."
Starmer is betting his premiership on the idea that Global Britain is the key to a prosperous Britain. But politics is local. If he cannot draw a clear line between his air miles and the price of milk, he risks losing the narrative at home while chasing influence abroad.
