Veteran politician Kiraitu Murungi retires from active politics after 30 years, revealing a battle with depression after his 2022 defeat and launching a new mission to promote happiness.

The "Crocodile" has finally left the river. In a move that marks the end of an era for Meru politics, veteran leader Kiraitu Murungi has officially retired from active politics to launch a "Happiness Crusade."
Speaking at Laikipia University where he was conferred with an honorary doctorate, the 74-year-old former Governor, Senator, and Cabinet Minister announced he is hanging up his boots after 30 years. But it is the reason for his departure that has captivated the nation. Kiraitu revealed that his shock defeat in the 2022 elections to Kawira Mwangaza plunged him into a deep depression, forcing him to seek nine months of professional counseling. "I almost slipped into depression," he admitted, stripping away the macho facade of Kenyan politics to reveal the brutal emotional toll of losing power.
Kiraitu’s transition from a hard-nosed political operator to a wellness advocate is startling. Known for his political cunning and the "Mbus" party, he was the undisputed kingpin of Meru for decades. However, the rejection by voters in 2022 was a "traumatic" wake-up call. "Politics is all I have known... that loss was very difficult to process," he confessed. His new mission is to mentor leaders on "life beyond politics," teaching them how to find joy outside the trappings of power.
This "low-volume politics," as he calls it, will see him act as an advisor rather than a contestant. It is a graceful exit for a man who served in the Kibaki and Uhuru administrations but found himself out of step with the "Hustler" wave. His wife, Priscillah Murungi, welcomed the move, signaling relief that the chaotic chapter of campaigns is closed.
Kiraitu’s retirement throws the Meru succession race wide open for 2027. By removing himself from the board, he allows a new generation of leaders to emerge without the shadow of the "King of Meru" looming over them. However, his influence will likely remain as a kingmaker.
As he steps back, Kiraitu leaves a complex legacy: a reformist in the 90s, a powerful minister in the 2000s, and a devolution pioneer in the 2010s. Yet, his final act—admitting vulnerability and choosing happiness over power—might be his most humanizing contribution yet. The Crocodile smiles, not at a prey, but at peace.
