Vincent Gakuhi should have been in a hospital bed, not a classroom. For the last five years, his body has been a battlefield, ravaged by a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as muscular sarcoma. Yet, when the 2025 KCSE results were announced, his name was not on a medical chart, but at the very top of the merit list. He scored an 'A' plain.

The journey to this triumph began with a deceptive toothache in 2020. What his mother, Lucy Ngugi—a nurse herself—thought was a cavity turned out to be the first sign of a life-altering diagnosis. Despite the devastating news, Vincent, then a bright pupil with 391 marks in KCPE, refused to let the disease define him. His admission to Njiiri School was delayed by a year of grueling treatment, but his resolve remained unbroken.

Studying Through the Pain

"There were days he could barely hold a pen," his mother recalls, tears of joy streaming down her face. "He would study in the ward, study between chemotherapy sessions, study when the pain was unbearable." Vincent underwent multiple surgeries to remove tumors, missing months of school at a time. Yet, he treated his textbooks with the same seriousness as his medication.
