Turkish billionaire Osman Elsek faces Al-Shabaab charges after a road rage clash with a Governor, claiming it’s a plot to grab his Sh6 billion empire.

From building estates to facing terror charges: the dramatic fall of Turkish billionaire Osman Elsek has sent shockwaves through the Coast’s business elite.
Osman Elsek, a prominent investor known for his multi-billion shilling construction projects, appeared before a Mombasa court this week facing the gravest of accusations: membership in the Al-Shabaab terror group. The charges come weeks after a violent road rage incident in Mtwapa involving Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Jiir, a clash that Elsek's lawyers claim is the true origin of his legal nightmare.
The saga began on January 12 on the Mombasa-Malindi highway. Police allege Elsek attacked the Governor's convoy. However, the narrative has shifted dramatically from assault to terrorism. The state now claims the tycoon was found with videos "meant to facilitate a terrorist attack" on his phone.
Elsek, who arrived in Kenya as a refugee in 2008, has built a business empire in real estate and hospitality. Now, he stands accused of being an enemy of the state that gave him sanctuary.
"I am a victim of a traffic accident, not a terrorist," Elsek stated in an affidavit. As the forensic audit of his devices continues, the case has become a high-stakes battle of narratives: is he a dangerous sleeper agent, or a wealthy man being hunted for his assets?
