Kenya Power schedules a major nine-hour system maintenance for December 3, set to impact homes, businesses, and key institutions across the country, including in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kiambu.

Thousands of Kenyans across ten counties are preparing for significant power disruptions this Wednesday, as the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) rolls out a planned maintenance exercise.
The scheduled interruption, announced on Tuesday, is necessary for network upkeep aimed at improving the grid's long-term stability and reliability. For many small business owners and households, however, it means a day of navigating challenges and potential losses, forcing a reliance on costly alternatives like generators.
The power cuts will affect a wide swathe of the country, with most outages slated to last from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EAT. In a public notice, KPLC confirmed the maintenance will impact parts of Nairobi, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Nyeri, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kitui, Siaya, and Taita Taveta counties.
Key areas and institutions to be affected include:
While KPLC frames these interruptions as essential for preventing larger, unplanned blackouts, the immediate economic impact on Kenyans is undeniable. For jua kali artisans, salon owners, and small eateries, a full day without electricity directly translates to a loss of income. The maintenance underscores the ongoing national conversation about Kenya's energy infrastructure and the urgent need for a stable power supply to fuel economic growth.
The utility provider has advised residents and businesses in the listed locations to make necessary preparations for the duration of the outage. As the country looks toward a more developed future, the reliability of its power grid remains a critical component for both household stability and national prosperity.
