Tragedy strikes KUPPET elections at City Primary School as a speeding vehicle ploughs into teachers queuing to vote, leaving one dead and scores wounded.

A day of democratic exercise turned into a scene of carnage in Nairobi after a speeding bus ploughed into a crowd of teachers at City Primary School in Ngara. One person has been confirmed dead and at least 30 others injured in the accident, which occurred as educators queued to vote in the heated KUPPET branch elections.
The incident happened at approximately 5:00 PM on Saturday. Witnesses described a horrific scene where a Githurai-bound bus, reportedly speeding down the slope from Murang'a Road, lost control and veered off the tarmac, crashing through the school gate where hundreds of teachers were waiting.
Panic gripped the polling station as the bus overturned, trapping victims under the wreckage. "We were just waiting to cast our votes," said James Mwangi, a visibly shaken teacher who narrowly escaped. "I heard a loud bang and screams. When I turned, the bus was on top of my colleagues. It happened in a flash."
Emergency services, including the Red Cross and Nairobi County ambulances, rushed to the scene. The injured were evacuated to Kenyatta National Hospital and nearby facilities. Several victims are reported to be in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
Nairobi Traffic Commandant George Seda visited the scene and confirmed that the driver is in police custody assisting with investigations. The wreckage of the bus has been towed to the Pangani Police Station. The accident has reignited the debate on road safety and the regulation of PSVs within the city center.
Union leaders have called for a speedy investigation and support for the victims' families. "This is a dark day for the teaching fraternity," a KUPPET official stated. "We came to choose leaders, not to bury colleagues."
As night fell over Ngara, the festive atmosphere of the election was replaced by bloodstained dust and scattered shoes. Relatives of the teachers have begun flocking to hospitals to locate their loved ones. For the teaching community in Nairobi, what was meant to be a celebration of democracy has ended in mourning.
