DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has stepped up preparations to maximise opportunities linked to the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), creating massive ripple effects for the entire East African economy.
The Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, recently held strategic discussions with stakeholders from the sports and entertainment sectors in Dar es Salaam. This marks a pivotal moment for the host nation as it gears up for the continent's grandest football showcase.
With Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania co-hosting the AFCON 2027 tournament, the region is on the precipice of an economic boom. The local stakeholders are positioning themselves to actively participate in and benefit from the economic and social impact associated with hosting millions of traveling fans.
The meetings, early this week, at the Liberation Heritage Centre, brought together key players from the sports and entertainment industries. The focus was to explore the wide range of opportunities expected ahead of the prestigious continental football tournament.
Speaking during the engagements, Mwinjuma reiterated the government's commitment to creating a supportive environment that enables local stakeholders to play a meaningful role in the success of the tournament.
He noted that the competition represents more than just football, describing it as a major platform for growth in sports business, entertainment, tourism, and cultural promotion. For neighboring Kenya, this means an unprecedented surge in cross-border tourism, hotel bookings, and retail sales, potentially injecting billions of Kenyan Shillings (KES) into the East African bloc.
“This tournament presents a unique opportunity for stakeholders in sports and entertainment to showcase their talents, services and creativity while contributing to the overall success of the event,” he said.
During the meetings, participants discussed potential areas of involvement, including sports promotion, entertainment programmes, fan engagement activities and other initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall experience of the competition.
The engagements also sought to strengthen partnerships between government authorities and industry players in order to unlock opportunities expected to arise before and during the tournament.
As preparations continue to gather momentum, the "Pamoja" bid trio are ensuring that AFCON 2027 delivers not only exciting football, but a lasting legacy. "We are not just hosting a tournament; we are showcasing East Africa to the world, opening our doors to global investments that will outlast the final whistle," Mwinjuma declared.
