Kenya’s green energy ambitions shift into high gear as a massive capital injection fast-tracks the Menengai Geothermal Project, promising cheaper power for the national grid.

Kenya’s drive to become a global renewable energy powerhouse has received a massive shot of adrenaline. A consortium of financiers has unlocked a Ksh 21 billion (approx. USD 160 million) loan facility to fast-track the completion of the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant, a critical infrastructure project located in the heart of the Rift Valley.
The funding, secured by the Independent Power Producer (IPP) spearheading the project, signals the end of delays that have plagued the 35MW facility. The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has already inked a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), guaranteeing that every megawatt generated at Menengai will be fed directly into the national grid.
The Menengai crater, a dormant volcano just outside Nakuru City, is the sleeping giant of Kenya’s energy sector. While Olkaria has long been the crown jewel, Menengai’s potential is estimated at over 1,600MW. This new funding specifically targets the construction of one of the three modular power plants designed for the field.
"This is not just about lights on in homes," said an energy analyst in Nairobi. "This is about industrial base load. Geothermal is the only renewable source that doesn't sleep when the sun goes down or the wind stops blowing."
For the "Wanjiku" on the street, the billions invested in pipes and turbines matter only if they translate to lower tokens. Geothermal energy is significantly cheaper than the thermal (diesel) generators it replaces. By bringing more geothermal online, KPLC reduces its reliance on expensive fuel cost charges that bloat consumer bills.
President William Ruto has frequently touted Kenya’s green grid—already 90% renewable—as a magnet for climate-conscious foreign investors. This loan is the cash backing that rhetoric. As the steam rises over Menengai, it carries with it the promise of a more reliable, affordable energy future for the manufacturing sector and households alike.
