**More than 1,500 athletes are set to tackle the notoriously tough Chororget-Iten course this Sunday, vying for a KES 1 million prize in a race that honours victims of recent mudslides.**
The crisp, high-altitude air of Iten will be electric with anticipation this Sunday as a field of over 1,500 elite athletes prepares to conquer the fourth Iten International Marathon. The race is not just a test of endurance against a punishing course, but a solemn occasion, dedicated to the memory of more than 40 people who tragically lost their lives in the November 1 mudslides that devastated parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County.
For the athletes, this race is a critical opportunity. A victory on this challenging terrain, known for its rolling hills and unforgiving nature, can be a launchpad to global stardom and significantly impact their financial future. The winners in both the men's and women's 42.195km races will each take home KES 1 million, a substantial prize that can transform the life of a Kenyan runner.
The Chororget-Iten route is legendary among runners. Starting in Chororget and finishing in the heart of Iten, the 'Home of Champions', the course's constant uphill and downhill sections at an elevation of 2,400m (7,900 ft) provide a formidable challenge that weeds out all but the most resilient. "It's a hard course and everyone can run well after racing in Iten," noted Susy Chemaimak, a past runner-up whose performance here propelled her to international victories.
This year’s race will see both established names and ambitious newcomers. Ednah Kimitei, a veteran of several international marathons, is making her debut in Iten after recovering from an injury. "I understand that the course is hard and the competition is tough but I have trained well and only hoping to run a good race and of course, the target is on the prize money," Kimitei told Standard Sports. She will be joined by Ezekiel Kiprais, another rising star eager to make his mark on the classic distance.
The Iten Marathon is a cornerstone for the local economy and community. Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, the race patron, emphasized the event's importance in nurturing talent and promoting the region. The marathon's theme, 'Climate Resilience', will be underscored by tree-planting exercises preceding the race. Beyond the main 42km event, the day will also feature:
The event has consistently served as a platform for athletes to secure international recognition. Luke Kiprop, who won the second edition, went on to compete in the Berlin Marathon and placed third in the 2025 Rio de Janeiro half marathon, demonstrating the doors a victory in Iten can open.
As the starting gun fires at 7:00 AM EAT, all eyes will be on the winding roads of Elgeyo Marakwet. For the athletes, it's a chance at glory and a better future. For the community, it's a moment of remembrance, resilience, and a celebration of the indomitable spirit that makes Iten the undisputed 'Home of Champions'.
