Sports CS Salim Mvurya confirms Kenya has appealed to CAF to lift the 60 percent attendance cap at Kasarani Stadium. Preparations include more fan zones and improved security measures.
Nairobi, Kenya – Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has confirmed that Kenya, through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), has formally appealed to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to lift the stadium capacity cap at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The appeal seeks approval to return to full capacity for the upcoming CHAN quarter-final between Kenya and Madagascar.
CAF reduced the allowable attendance to 60 percent, capping it at approximately 27,000 spectators, following repeated security and safety breaches during earlier CHAN group matches in Kenya.
CS Mvurya cited a “near-perfect” fan behaviour during the last group match against Zambia as a key rationale for seeking the reversal. He called the conduct a strong signal that Kenya can safely host full-capacity matches.
While awaiting CAF’s response, the LOC has deployed several enhancements:
Expanded official fan zones from 10 to 13 across Nairobi to accommodate overflow and amplify support.
Strengthened security, lighting, and gate operations at Kasarani.
CAF is also addressing ticketing platform glitches to ensure seamless fan access.
