Gaming giant SportPesa is leveraging its extensive reach in Kenyan sports to drive a nationwide campaign for breast cancer awareness, aiming to transform public understanding and encourage early detection, a critical factor in survival rates.
Nairobi, Kenya – As October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month globally, SportPesa Kenya has launched a comprehensive campaign, 'SportPesa In Pink,' to amplify awareness and promote early detection of breast cancer across the nation. The initiative, which integrates pink branding across digital platforms, events, and partner activations, seeks to unite Kenyans through the power of sport in the fight against the disease.
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in Kenya, accounting for approximately 23.3% of all cancer cases diagnosed in women, with an estimated 6,799 new cases annually and about 3,107 deaths per year. The National Cancer Registry of Kenya (NaCaRe-KE) reported 4,824 breast cancer cases between 2020 and 2023, with Nairobi County recording the highest number. A significant challenge is that 70% to 80% of breast cancer cases in Kenya are diagnosed at advanced stages, severely reducing survival rates.
Kenya has made strides in cancer control, establishing the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) under the Ministry of Health. This program focuses on prevention, awareness, and screening services, with free or subsidized mammography available in select facilities. In 2016, former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta launched a public-private partnership to boost screening, treatment, and management of breast cancer, highlighting the need for investment in infrastructure, research, and personnel. More recently, in 2021, the Ministry of Health launched the Breast Cancer Screening and Early Diagnosis Action Plan 2021-2025, aligned with the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative, which aims to reduce mortality by 2.5% annually.
The Kenyan government has decentralized oncology services, establishing treatment hubs in Kisumu, Mombasa, and Eldoret to enhance accessibility. Collaborations with organizations like Roche Kenya, the International Cancer Institute of Kenya, and Amref Health Africa have supported the training of oncology healthcare professionals and the establishment of national breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment guidelines. Furthermore, partnerships with the Kenya National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) have aimed to ensure patients have access to reimbursement for the entire duration of breast cancer treatment.
SportPesa's 'SportPesa In Pink' campaign involves collaborations with its sponsored football teams, including Gor Mahia, Shabana, Murang'a Seal, and the Kenya 7s rugby team, to disseminate awareness messages to fans nationwide. Esther Kang'ethe, Head of Marketing at SportPesa Kenya, emphasised the campaign's goal: "Early detection saves lives. Together, we can turn awareness into action." The initiative also extends to grassroots levels through its Tujiamini community projects, fostering non-promotional conversations about screening and preventive care.
The high rate of late-stage diagnoses in Kenya significantly contributes to lower survival rates compared to developed regions. This underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, accessible screening, and affordable treatment options to improve patient outcomes. Cultural barriers and misconceptions also continue to discourage women from seeking timely medical attention.
While awareness campaigns are crucial, the direct impact of such initiatives on actual screening rates and subsequent early diagnoses requires continuous monitoring and evaluation. The long-term effectiveness of corporate social responsibility programs in significantly shifting public health outcomes for complex diseases like cancer is an area that often requires extensive data and time to assess fully. The specific targets for increased screening numbers as a direct result of the 'SportPesa In Pink' campaign have not been publicly detailed.
The 'SportPesa In Pink' campaign will run throughout October 2025. SportPesa's Tujiamini initiative will also incorporate the Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign during its event on Friday, October 4, 2025, at Dandora Grounds in Nairobi. The Ministry of Health's Breast Cancer Screening and Early Diagnosis Action Plan is set to continue until 2025.
Observers will be keen to see the measurable impact of SportPesa's campaign on breast cancer awareness and screening uptake across Kenya. The ongoing implementation of the government's Breast Cancer Screening and Early Diagnosis Action Plan, and its ability to decentralize oncology services and improve access to diagnostics, will be critical in reducing the burden of breast cancer in the country. Continued collaboration between the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations will be essential in achieving sustainable improvements in cancer care.
