Nairobi-based Mugala Naturals is turning indigenous sorghum and millet into premium health foods, fighting the diabetes epidemic while championing climate-resilient agriculture in a bold "food as medicine" crusade.

In the heart of Nairobi, a quiet culinary revolution is brewing, turning the "poor man's crop" into a weapon against the silent epidemic of lifestyle diseases.
Andrew Egala, a visionary entrepreneur and alum of JKUAT, is betting big on the past to save the future. Through his startup, Mugala Naturals, he is rehabilitating the image of indigenous African grains—sorghum and millet—transforming them from neglected staples into premium, health-boosting superfoods. His mission? To prove that "food is thy medicine."
Egala’s venture was born in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that brutally exposed the fragility of global health. "We saw that immunity was everything," Egala recalls. His response was to look inward, to the climate-resilient crops that have sustained Africans for millennia. Under the brand Green Without Borders, he has developed a line of gluten-free, low-glycemic snacks and breakfast cereals specifically designed for diabetics and the health-conscious.
The stakes could not be higher. Diabetes and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are rising at an alarming rate in Kenya, fueled by sedentary urban lifestyles and processed diets. By reintroducing complex carbohydrates like sorghum, Mugala Naturals is offering a delicious defense shield.
The path has not been paved with gold. Like many Kenyan manufacturing startups, Mugala Naturals faces a "Valley of Death" defined by red tape. Egala cites the labyrinth of licenses—from public health certificates to KEBS standardization—as a formidable barrier to entry for small players.
As Mugala Naturals gains shelf space, it sends a powerful message: the solution to our modern health crisis might just be growing in our grandmother’s garden.
