Somaliland’s President Abdirahman “Irro” Mohamed opened a representative liaison office in Nairobi on May 29, a move attended by some Kenyan officials. Despite Kenya officially recognizing Somalia's sovereignty,
Nairobi, Kenya – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman “Irro” Mohamed, formally inaugurated a Somaliland liaison office in Nairobi on May 29. This development, widely interpreted as a move by the breakaway region to assert its quest for greater autonomy and international recognition, has proven controversial, particularly as Kenya had previously stated it would not recognize Somaliland's independence from Somalia.
The inauguration ceremony was notably attended by several Kenyan officials, including Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii. Following the event, representatives from both Somaliland and Kenya issued statements indicating their intention to focus on enhancing business, trade, and community ties. Somaliland’s presidential spokesman, Hussein Aden Igeh, described the meeting between President Irro and Kenyan President William Ruto as “cordial and productive.” He further reaffirmed the “strong and longstanding relationship between Somaliland and Kenya – a partnership anchored in mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for peace, stability and prosperity.”
Despite these engagements, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its official stance that it continues to regard Somaliland as an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The Ministry clarified that any diplomatic status implied or accorded to the new Nairobi office was not approved by the Kenyan government. Nevertheless, President Irro’s visit and the high-level meetings suggest a pragmatic willingness from both sides to engage on practical issues of mutual interest, such as trade, regional security, and diaspora affairs, even while navigating the formal diplomatic differences regarding Somaliland's political status.
