Siaya Governor James Orengo, who previously called for President Ruto’s resignation, publicly praised the president for development projects and pledged to welcome him to the county for an upcoming trade conference.
Siaya, Kenya – Governor James Orengo, a long-time critic of President William Ruto, struck a conciliatory tone on Sunday, openly praising the head of state during a service at St Peter’s ACK Cathedral.
Orengo highlighted Ruto’s commitment to deliver flagship projects in Siaya, including:
A 20,000-seat stadium
A new county referral hospital
He urged residents to welcome the president warmly when he returns to the county on 16 October, stressing that the projects would significantly improve sports infrastructure and healthcare.
The governor also confirmed that Siaya will host the International Trade and Investment Conference 2025, with Ruto as guest of honour.
The remarks mark a sharp reversal from July, when Orengo joined other opposition leaders in demanding Ruto’s resignation over economic hardships. This time, he struck a collaborative note: “We are ready to work with the national government for the sake of development. Maturity in politics calls for collaboration rather than constant confrontation.”
Orengo revealed that opposition leader Raila Odinga personally asked him to extend a welcome to Ruto, signaling a broader recalibration within the Azimio coalition. By stressing partnership over rivalry, Orengo framed national support as essential for county growth.
Analysts suggest the governor’s olive branch could reduce tensions between Siaya and the national government, potentially unlocking further investment. However, Orengo risks backlash from hard-line supporters who still distrust Ruto.
Despite that risk, the governor maintains that aligning with the president’s development agenda is the most practical way to advance Siaya’s interests.
