Education CS Julius Ogamba demands documented evidence from parents to crack down on school principals colluding with expensive uniform suppliers.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has thrown the gauntlet back to parents in the war against school uniform cartels. Amidst a public outcry over schools forcing parents to buy uniforms from specific, expensive suppliers, the CS has declared: "We cannot act on rumors. Bring us the receipts."
Speaking at a stakeholders' forum in Nairobi, Ogamba acknowledged the widespread complaints that some principals are colluding with local tailors to inflate prices. However, he insisted that the Ministry’s hands are tied without formal, documented complaints.
The issue has reached a boiling point as Grade 10 learners transition to Senior School. Parents report being given "referral slips" to specific downtown shops where a shirt that costs KSh 500 elsewhere is sold for KSh 1,200.
"It is a racket," said one parent at the forum. "If you buy from the market, the school rejects the shade of blue. You must buy from their person."
The standoff highlights the murky economics of Kenya’s education sector. For many heads, uniform kickbacks are a lucrative side hustle. For parents already squeezed by the cost of living, every shilling counts. CS Ogamba’s directive is clear, but enforcement is the real test. Until a principal is made an example of, the "specific shop" sign is likely to remain on the school noticeboard.
