President William Ruto has awarded the Harambee Starlets a total of Ksh10 million, significantly boosting the team's morale following their crucial 3-1 first-leg victory over The Gambia in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

President William Ruto has provided a significant financial boost to the Kenya women's national football team, Harambee Starlets, with a total package of Ksh10 million following their victory against The Gambia. The incentive came in two parts: an initial Ksh5 million as a motivational gesture before their 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier on Friday, October 24, 2025, and an additional Ksh5 million bonus after their impressive 3-1 win at Nyayo National Stadium.
The financial commitment was confirmed by government officials representing the President at the match. Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, affirmed the President's dedication to supporting the sports sector. Mwangi conveyed a message of encouragement from the President before the game, stating that the initial Ksh5 million had already been wired to energize the team. After the victory, he confirmed the release of the second Ksh5 million bonus.
The match, which kicked off at 4:00 PM EAT, was the first leg of the final qualifying round for the 2026 WAFCON to be held in Morocco. Kenya demonstrated a strong performance, scoring all three of their goals in the first half through Mwanahalima Adam, Fasila Adhiambo, and Shalyne Opisa. This victory gives the Harambee Starlets a crucial advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in Thiès, Senegal, as The Gambia does not have a CAF-approved stadium.
A draw in the away fixture will be enough to secure Kenya's spot in the continental tournament for the first time since their debut in 2016. The 2026 WAFCON is particularly significant as it has been expanded to include 16 teams and will also serve as the qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, with the top four teams earning automatic qualification.
President Ruto's support extends beyond the Ksh10 million gift. Further incentives have been promised to the team should they qualify. These include Ksh1 million for each player for an away win that secures qualification, and Ksh500,000 each for a draw that leads to qualification. This performance-based reward system is part of a broader government strategy to professionalize sports and recognize athletic achievement, as seen with recent substantial bonuses awarded to the men's national team, Harambee Stars, during their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign.
The financial backing is a welcome development for the Harambee Starlets, who, like many national teams, have faced financial challenges in the past. In previous years, issues with unpaid allowances and funding shortfalls have occasionally disrupted team preparations. This renewed government focus on rewarding athletes aims to create a more stable and motivating environment for players to excel on the international stage.
Under the guidance of head coach Beldine Odemba, the Harambee Starlets are on the verge of a significant achievement. Qualifying for WAFCON would mark their second-ever appearance at the tournament and the first under a female head coach. The team's journey to this final round included a historic 1-0 away victory against Tunisia on February 26, 2025, a match where a goal from Tereza Engesha and two penalty saves from goalkeeper Lilian Awuor secured their progress.
The players have expressed high morale and confidence, urging Kenyans to continue supporting them as they head into the decisive second leg. Defender Ruth Ingotsi and forward Violet Nanjala have been vocal about the team's determination to realize their WAFCON dream. With strong government backing and a solid first-leg lead, the Harambee Starlets are well-positioned to make a historic return to Africa's premier women's football tournament.
