President Ruto attempts to mend fences with Gen Z, urging them to ignore "pessimists" and believe in his administration’s economic transformation plan.

President William Ruto has issued a passionate appeal to Kenya’s Gen Z, urging them to reject the "pessimism that afflicts some voices in public life" and instead embrace a narrative of hope and national transformation.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during the President’s Award–Kenya Gold Award presentation ceremony, the Head of State sought to bridge the widening gap between his administration and the country’s restless youth. [...](asc_slot://start-slot-17)Ruto described his faith in the youth as "deep and unshakable," a sharp contrast to the combative relationship that has defined recent months of protests and online activism.
"I want to urge every young person here to believe in our country," Ruto said, addressing the gold awardees. [...](asc_slot://start-slot-19)"Do not allow yourselves to be consumed by the pessimism. Optimistic people see opportunity in every challenge, while pessimists see only obstacles in every opportunity."
The President framed the youth not just as beneficiaries of government policy, but as the "software" essential for running the nation’s hardware—its infrastructure and economy. He touted his administration’s achievements, including the recruitment of 100,000 teachers and the construction of 23,000 classrooms, as evidence that the government is laying the groundwork for their success.
The ceremony honored young Kenyans who have excelled in community service, skills development, and physical recreation. Ruto used their example to champion the values of discipline and volunteerism. "Kenya’s future belongs to those who choose hope, effort, and purpose," he declared.
As the gold awardees left State House, the challenge remains: can the President’s rhetoric of optimism translate into tangible jobs and opportunities that will convince the skeptical millions of Gen Z outside the palace gates?
