President Ruto hosts African leaders for an emergency climate summit, pushing for the AAAP 2.0 program to secure financing for the continent’s adaptation.

President William Ruto has once again taken the mantle of Africa’s climate champion, convening a high-stakes emergency meeting of continental leaders. His message was stark and uncompromising: Africa faces a "development, justice, and security emergency," and the time for polite diplomacy is over.
Hosting the virtual Special Africa Leaders’ Meeting on Climate Adaptation, Ruto rallied Heads of State to back the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme (AAAP) 2.0. The goal is to mobilize billions in financing to "climate-proof" the continent’s future.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf supported Ruto’s call, noting that climate change is eroding decades of economic gains. The leaders emphasized that adaptation is no longer an environmental niche but a macro-economic survival strategy.
"We are aligning adaptation with economic stability," Ruto declared. "We must unlock resilient growth, or we will be washed away."
As the chair of the Committee of African Heads of State on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Ruto is positioning Nairobi as the diplomatic cockpit for the Global South. The summit reinforces Kenya’s pivot to green diplomacy, demanding that the world pays its climate debt to the continent that pays the highest price.
