Kitui mango farmers face 90% post-harvest losses as fruit flies and market failure turn a bumper harvest into an economic disaster.

The sweet scent of ripening mangoes in Kitui has turned into the sour stench of rotting fruit. In a tragedy of epic proportions, farmers in the county are watching helplessly as 90% of their bumper harvest rots on the ground, devoured by pests and market failure.
This is not just an agricultural loss; it is an economic crime against the rural poor. Kitui, which produces some of the sweetest mangoes in East Africa, is bleeding billions of shillings while Nairobi supermarkets sell imported fruit at exorbitant prices. The disconnect between the farm gate and the dinner table has never been more painful.
Data from the County Department of Agriculture paints a grim picture. Post-harvest losses have surged to between 45% and 90% in some wards. The primary culprit is the dreaded fruit fly, but the secondary killer is a lack of market access.
"I harvested five tonnes," says Joshua Mwendwa, a farmer in Mwingi West. "I sold one tonne. The rest are manure. The brokers offered me KES 5 per piece. I would rather feed them to the cows."
The County Government, led by CECM for Agriculture Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, is finally scrambling to stop the bleeding. They have announced the formation of "Farmer Producer Organisations" (FPOs) to aggregate produce and bypass the predatory brokers.
The crisis exposes the structural rot in Kenya’s agriculture. We build roads but forget cold storage. We train farmers to plant but not to negotiate. Until Kitui gets a functioning processing plant that can handle the volume, the "Gold of Kitui" will continue to be nothing more than compost.
