Bishop Obanyi confirms services will resume following a crippling cash crunch that left thousands stranded.

The agonizing wait is finally over for the residents of Mumias. After months of locked gates and deserted wards, the iconic St. Mary’s Mission Hospital is poised to roar back to life.
The closure, triggered by a paralyzing delay in disbursements from the Social Health Authority (SHA), had plunged the region into a healthcare crisis. Bishop Joseph Obanyi’s announcement brings a much-needed pulse back to the community, confirming that the facility will reopen its doors by the end of January.
St. Mary's, a lifeline for thousands of low-income families in Kakamega County, shut down last year when staff downed tools over unpaid salaries. The hospital management cited a cash crunch caused by the government's failure to remit millions in SHA claims. The stalemate left patients stranded and forced many to seek expensive alternatives in private clinics.
"We could not allow essential health services to remain unavailable to the people any longer," Bishop Obanyi declared. In a bold move, the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has secured borrowed funds to settle a portion of the staff arrears and facilitate the reopening. "As a church, we had to intervene," the Bishop added.
While the reopening is a victory, it exposes the fragile state of Kenya's transition to the new social health insurance model. St. Mary's was the canary in the coal mine; its closure signaled deep structural flaws in SHA's disbursement mechanisms.
For the grandmother in Mumias who needs her diabetes medication, the politics of funding matter little. All that matters is that when she walks through those gates next week, there will be a doctor to see her. The prayers of the community have been answered, but the government must now keep its promise to pay up.
