SUPKEM praises the government decision to waive taxes on imported dates for Ramadan, a move championed by CS Aden Duale to lower costs for the Muslim community.

The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has expressed profound gratitude to the government following President William Ruto's directive to waive import duties on dates ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. The move is seen as a significant cushion for the Muslim community amidst the rising cost of living.
With Ramadan set to commence in early March 2026, the demand for dates—a staple food used to break the fast (Iftar)—is expected to skyrocket. The tax exemption, which covers imports for the next two months, will ensure that this essential commodity remains affordable for millions of faithful across the country.
Speaking in Nairobi, SUPKEM leadership lauded the intervention as a demonstration of "religious inclusivity and national unity." Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, a key liaison in the negotiations, noted that the waiver was a direct response to a petition filed by the council.
"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Ruto," Duale stated. "This noble initiative eases access to this essential fruit for Iftar and reflects the government's unwavering support for the Muslim community. It is a gift that will be felt in every household, from Mandera to Mombasa."
The exemption applies to dates imported between February and April 2026. This is the second consecutive year the Kenya Kwanza administration has granted such a waiver, cementing a policy that is quickly becoming a tradition.
As the countdown to Ramadan begins, the focus now shifts to ensuring the smooth distribution of the commodity. For the ordinary Muslim fasting in the sweltering heat of Garissa or the bustle of Eastleigh, the government's decision is more than just policy—it is an act of spiritual facilitation.
