Alex Honnold’s live Netflix climb of Taipei 101 is delayed by 24 hours due to rain, highlighting the deadly risks of scaling the 1,667ft skyscraper without ropes.

Mother Nature has done what no mountain could: stopped Alex Honnold. The legendary free soloist was forced to postpone his rope-free ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper as rain slicked the 1,667-foot tower.
The event, billed as "Skyscraper Live" by Netflix, was set to be a global spectacle. However, with millions watching and the climber suited up, organizers called a 24-hour delay. Honnold, famous for his emotionless pragmatism, agreed with the decision, noting that friction on glass and steel is non-negotiable.
"Sadly, it's raining in Taipei," Honnold said in a video statement, looking up at the mist-shrouded spire. "On rock, you can find a dry hold. On a glass building, moisture means death. There is no margin for error here."
The Taipei 101 is a unique beast. Unlike the granite of El Capitan, it is constructed of eight "bamboo" segments, creating massive overhangs that require extreme physical exertion to overcome. Climbing it without ropes is a feat of endurance as much as skill.
The climb is now rescheduled for Sunday morning, weather permitting. Forecasts predict clearer skies, but the humidity of Taipei remains a wildcard. A wet surface would make the smooth aluminum fins of the tower unclimbable.
For now, the world waits. Honnold remains on the ground, his hands dry, his mind focused, staring up at a man-made mountain that is currently off-limits.
This delay serves as a chilling reminder: in the world of free soloing, you don't just conquer the climb; you must also survive the elements.
