Tragedy strikes Kisumu as four siblings drown in an open quarry in Kanyakwar while trying to rescue each other, sparking outrage over abandoned excavation sites.

A cloud of unimaginable grief hangs over Kanyakwar village in Kisumu Central after four siblings drowned in an open quarry. What began as a Sunday afternoon of play turned into a horrific tragedy that has claimed nearly an entire generation of one family.
The victims, young boys aged between 9 and 14, were playing near the abandoned excavation site when disaster struck. According to witnesses and local administration, one of the boys slipped into the deep, stagnant water. In a heartbreaking display of brotherly love, three other siblings jumped in, one after the other, in a desperate attempt to save him. None of them made it out alive.
Kondele Chief Maurice Ajwang confirmed the incident, painting a grim picture of the scene. "They were overwhelmed by the depth of the water," he said. The bodies were later retrieved by local divers, leaving the parents and the community in a state of absolute devastation. The open quarry, left unfenced and filled with rain water, had turned into a death trap that the residents had long feared.
The incident has sparked outrage over the negligence of construction companies and land owners who leave quarries open after harvesting materials. These sites become silent killers, particularly for children who are drawn to the water but are unaware of the treacherous depths and slippery slopes.
Today, the laughter of four children is missing from Kanyakwar. The quarry remains, a still and deadly reminder of safety regulations ignored and young lives cut short. As the family prepares for a funeral of four, the entire nation mourns with them, questioning why such hazards are allowed to exist in our neighborhoods.
This is not just an accident; it is a systemic failure. Until we value the safety of our children over the convenience of contractors, such tragedies will continue to break our hearts.
