The acclaimed studio behind narrative hits 'Detroit: Become Human' is testing its first free-to-play multiplayer game, a move that could tap into Kenya's burgeoning and lucrative esports market.

French video game developer Quantic Dream, renowned for its cinematic, single-player narrative adventures like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, is making a significant pivot into the competitive multiplayer arena. The studio has announced the first closed beta for its new title, Spellcasters Chronicles, a free-to-play, 3-vs-3 Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). The beta will run on the Steam platform for PC from Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 6:00 PM EAT (15:00 UTC) to Monday, December 8, 2025, at 12:00 PM EAT (09:00 UTC). This initial test phase will be available to selected players in Europe and North America who register via the game's official website or Steam page.
Spellcasters Chronicles marks a stark departure from Quantic Dream's established formula of choice-driven storytelling. The game is a third-person action-strategy title where two teams of three players, each controlling a powerful "Spellcaster," battle in mystical arenas. A key differentiator from genre titans like League of Legends and Dota 2 is its deck-building component. Players will craft decks of spells, creatures, and buildings to summon onto the battlefield, with the ultimate goal of destroying the opposing team's base. The beta will feature one arena, The Mausoleum, and grant access to six distinct Spellcaster classes, 11 creatures, and eight spells to allow players to experiment with the core mechanics. Matches are designed to last approximately 25-30 minutes.
While the beta is not yet available in Africa, the game's free-to-play model and focus on the globally popular MOBA genre position it as a title of interest for Kenya's rapidly expanding gaming community. The Kenyan gaming market, valued at approximately $153 million in 2024, is one of the continent's leaders, alongside South Africa and Nigeria. This growth is fueled by increasing internet penetration and a large, tech-savvy youth population. According to a 2025 report from Newzoo, Kenya has over 11 million video gamers. Mobile gaming currently dominates the local scene, with titles like PUBG Mobile having over 300,000 active Kenyan players. However, there is a strong and growing ecosystem for PC and console-based esports, supported by organizations like the Esports Kenya Federation (ESKF) and venues such as the Nairobi Gaming Hub. Should Spellcasters Chronicles prove successful and expand its server access, it could find a receptive audience in a market eager for new competitive titles. The free-to-play model is particularly crucial, as the high cost of gaming hardware and software remains a significant barrier for many Kenyans.
Quantic Dream is entering a highly competitive market. The global mobile MOBA market alone was estimated at $15 billion in 2025. Established PC titles like League of Legends boast tens of millions of daily active players and record-breaking esports viewership. Spellcasters Chronicles' unique blend of third-person action and strategic deck-building appears designed to carve out a niche in this crowded space. The studio has confirmed a second, more expansive closed beta is planned for early 2026, which will introduce new characters and content as the game moves towards an Early Access release. Meanwhile, Quantic Dream, which was founded in 1997 by David Cage and acquired by Chinese tech giant NetEase in 2022, has assured fans that development of its other major project, Star Wars: Eclipse, is continuing. First announced in 2021, Star Wars: Eclipse is an action-adventure game set in the High Republic era, though few details and no release window have been provided.
