Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has presided over the issuance of title deeds to 105 families displaced by the devastating Mai Mahiu floods, fulfilling a key state resettlement pledge.
Tears of tragedy turned to tears of relief on Tuesday as the government finally delivered on its promise to the victims of the Mai Mahiu disaster. In a sombre yet hopeful ceremony, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki handed over the legal documents that grant these families permanent ownership of their new homes, closing a painful chapter of displacement.
The issuance of 105 title deeds marks the final phase of a resettlement program for families who lost everything when the floodwaters swept through their village. The disaster, which claimed dozens of lives, had left a scar on the national conscience, prompting President William Ruto to promise swift and dignified resettlement.
Speaking at the event, DP Kindiki emphasized that the government's duty extends beyond emergency response to long-term restoration. "We promised that you would not be forgotten, and today we seal that promise with the authority of the law," Kindiki stated.
The resettlement involves not just land, but the provision of basic amenities to ensure the new community is sustainable. The DP assured the residents that the government would continue to monitor their integration and provide necessary support infrastructure, including water and roads.
"Land is dignity," Kindiki remarked as he handed over the first deed. "Never again shall we leave our people behind in their hour of greatest need."
