Dennis Itumbi hires comedian Kafengo and pledges to split his salary.Presidential aide Dennis Itumbi to share his salary with comedian Kafengo after appointing him to state job
Nairobi, Kenya — July 29, 2025 — In a symbolic and innovative gesture, Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, has formally hired comedian and content creator Kafengo—alongside his videographer, Mike—and pledged to personally share his government salary with them.
Itumbi made the promise during the funeral of the late comedian KK Mwenyewe, whom Kafengo had lovingly supported by coordinating burial logistics and fundraising efforts. Now, that commitment has come to fruition.
Kafengo and Mike will join Itumbi’s team to help build new digital platforms aimed at strengthening Kenya’s creative economy. Importantly, they will maintain independence in their personal content ventures.
Itumbi lauded Kafengo, noting his academic background in Mathematics with Computing and applauding his “algebra‑level precision” in tackling digital challenges.
The move has garnered widespread attention, framed both as a touching response to loss and a forward-looking investment in creative talent. Some observers see it as an inspiring model of mentorship and support within Kenya’s digital content space. However, critical voices, including some from the entertainment community, raised concerns over government involvement in creative roles.
This initiative also aligns with Itumbi’s broader agenda to enhance the digital creative sector—a sector he noted needs better monetization pathways for Kenyan creators.
Empowering Talent: Itumbi’s offer demonstrates how institutional support can uplift creators who contribute significantly to public life and culture.
Transparency and Gesture: Voluntarily sharing his own salary reflects a personal commitment to mentorship and fairness.
Sector Impact: Such moves may catalyze wider discussions on how government and public officials can meaningfully support the creative economy.
