Kenyan President William Ruto met with Somaliland’s President Abdirahman “Irro” Mohamed in Nairobi on May 29. Described as “cordial and productive,” the talks focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, education, and security, despite Kenya's official stance on Somaliland's status.
Nairobi, Kenya – Kenyan President William Ruto held a significant meeting on May 29 with Somaliland’s President Abdirahman “Irro” Mohamed at State House in Nairobi. The discussions were officially described by both sides as “cordial and productive,” with both leaders pledging to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors including trade, education, and regional security.
According to Somaliland’s presidential spokesman, Hussein Aden Igeh, President Ruto and President Irro explored concrete ways to boost investment flows and ease air travel restrictions between their respective territories. They also reportedly agreed on joint initiatives aimed at countering violent extremism in the Horn of Africa and enhancing academic exchange programs. Mr. Igeh stated that the meeting “reaffirmed the strong and longstanding relationship between Somaliland and Kenya – a partnership anchored in mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for peace, stability and prosperity.”
This high-level meeting occurred shortly after Kenya’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its official position of not granting formal diplomatic status to Somaliland’s newly opened liaison office in Nairobi, emphasizing its recognition of a unified Somalia. However, President Ruto’s engagement with President Irro was framed as an opportunity to address practical issues directly affecting communities in both Kenya and Somaliland. Political analysts suggest that these talks signal Kenya’s strategic interest in engaging with Somaliland on a technical and functional level, particularly on economic and security matters, even while maintaining its formal diplomatic allegiance to the Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu.
