Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi has called upon the youth to embrace the teachings of the Holy Qur'an to build a morally upright society.

Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi has passionately underscored the critical importance of nurturing a culture of reading and respecting the Holy Qur'an among young people, framing it as the bedrock for a morally upright and united East African society.
In an era characterized by rapid globalization and shifting cultural paradigms, the quest for moral anchoring has never been more urgent. Speaking at the National Holy Qur'an Competition in Dar es Salaam, President Mwinyi delivered a resounding call to action, urging the youth to integrate religious teachings into their daily lives.
This initiative goes beyond spiritual devotion; it is a strategic effort to forge a cohesive, disciplined, and resilient generation capable of navigating the complex socio-economic challenges of the modern world. By anchoring youth development in Qur'anic values, the leadership aims to inoculate the younger generation against radicalization, moral decay, and social fragmentation.
President Mwinyi's address highlighted the symbiotic relationship between religious fidelity and civic responsibility. The competition, organized by the Aisha Sururu Foundation, brought together participants from both Mainland Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago, serving as a powerful conduit for national unity. In a region where religious identity deeply influences social dynamics, such platforms are vital for fostering mutual understanding and solidarity.
The President commended the foundation and the Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) for their collaborative efforts. He articulated that the discipline required to memorize and recite the Qur'an translates directly into the discipline required to be a productive citizen. The values of patience, perseverance, and ethical conduct are universally applicable, transcending religious boundaries to benefit the broader society.
East Africa is currently experiencing a youth bulge, with over 60% of the population under the age of 25. While this demographic presents a tremendous opportunity for economic growth, it also poses significant risks if not properly channeled. High unemployment rates and systemic inequalities can breed frustration and delinquency.
Taking advantage of the imminent Holy Month of Ramadan, Dr. Mwinyi reminded the faithful to amplify acts of compassion and generosity. Supporting vulnerable demographics, including orphans and persons with disabilities, is not merely a religious obligation but a societal imperative. "Such actions bring blessings, strengthen love and promote peace within communities," he emphasized.
The event also served as a moment of reflection on the legacy of the late Ali Hassan Mwinyi, whose contribution to promoting Qur'anic scholarship was formally recognized. This generational continuity underscores the enduring nature of these values within Tanzanian leadership.
The awarding of a massive cash prize of KES 250,000 (approx. 5m TZS) to the winner, Said Rashid Bakari, illustrates the tangible encouragement provided to the youth. It elevates religious scholarship from a purely spiritual endeavor to an esteemed societal achievement, inspiring others to follow suit.
"When a person leaves this world, they should be remembered for their good deeds," President Mwinyi concluded, challenging the youth to build a legacy that will illuminate the path for future generations.
