Meta is testing premium subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, offering advanced AI tools and features that could create a two-tiered digital experience for Kenyan users.

The era of "free" social media is drawing to a close. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to pilot a controversial new premium subscription model, signalling a fundamental shift in how Kenyans will interact with their favourite apps.
According to reports verified by TechCrunch, the tech giant will test these subscriptions in the coming months. Unlike the existing "Meta Verified" badge which focuses on identity protection, this new tier is about unlocking functionality. Users who pay will gain access to advanced AI tools and productivity features, creating a two-tiered digital society.
The core selling point of the subscription is access to Meta’s next-generation AI, bolstered by its recent KES 258 billion ($2 billion) acquisition of the AI firm Manus. This includes "Vibes," a video generation tool, and autonomous agents capable of performing complex tasks like travel planning or business scheduling directly within WhatsApp.
For the average Kenyan user, who relies on WhatsApp for everything from *chama* meetings to M-Pesa transactions, the threat of a paywall is alarming. While basic messaging will likely remain free, the gatekeeping of advanced features could widen the digital divide.
Meta is betting that users are "subscription fatigued" but willing to pay for tangible value. However, in price-sensitive markets like East Africa, asking users to pay for apps that have been free for a decade is a high-stakes gamble. The pilot will determine if users are ready to become customers, or if they will migrate to the next free alternative.
