Kenyan workers are bracing for thinner payslips next month as the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) triggers the third phase of its aggressive rate hikes, pushing top-tier deductions to a painful Ksh 108,000 limit.

Kenyan workers are bracing for thinner payslips next month as the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) triggers the third phase of its aggressive rate hikes, pushing top-tier deductions to a painful Ksh 108,000 limit.
The government paints this as a necessary step to secure the nation’s retirement future, boasting that the fund has now hit Ksh 83 billion. But for the average "Wanjiku," this is yet another raid on an already battered income, coming at a time when the cost of living remains stubbornly high.
Starting February 1, 2026, the "Tier II" pensionable earnings limit will jump from Ksh 72,000 to Ksh 108,000 (approx. USD 830). This means high-income earners will see a significantly larger chunk of their salary locked away. The lower limit (Tier I) also rises to Ksh 9,000.
"It is not a tax, it is savings," the NSSF insists. Yet, trust in the institution remains low. The promise of a wealthy retirement feels abstract to a workforce struggling to pay school fees today. Employers, too, are feeling the pinch, as they must match these contributions shilling for shilling.
The aggressive implementation of the NSSF Act 2013 is reshaping the labor market. Small businesses are reportedly freezing hiring to cope with the increased overheads. "You are forcing me to save for a future I might not reach because I can't afford food today," lamented a Nairobi office worker.
As the Ksh 83 billion milestone is celebrated in boardrooms, the mood on the street is one of resignation. The government has its billions; the people have their tightening belts.
