Kitui County rolls out a subsidized mass livestock vaccination drive at Sh50 per head to protect herds from Foot and Mouth Disease as drought forces risky migrations and threatens livelihoods.

With the sun scorching the earth and pastures turning to dust, Kitui County has launched a critical defensive maneuver to save its most valuable asset: livestock. In a race against disease and death, the county government has rolled out a subsidized mass vaccination drive targeting thousands of animals.
The campaign, set to kick off in Nuu Ward, Mwingi Central, comes at a time when the region is grappling with the dual threat of worsening drought and the looming specter of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). For the pastoralists of Kitui, whose entire wealth walks on four legs, this intervention is not just a service; it is a lifeline.
Recognizing the financial strain on farmers who are already buying water and expensive hay, the county has slashed the cost of vaccination. "We are charging a nominal fee of Sh50 per head of cattle," confirmed a county agriculture official. "This is to ensure ownership and sustainability, but the bulk of the cost is borne by the county. We cannot allow disease to finish what the drought has started."
The drive will systematically cover all 40 wards, ensuring a "ring-fencing" effect against outbreaks. Beyond FMD, the teams will also be screening for other drought-related ailments that prey on weakened immune systems.
The context of this drive is grim. Water sources in Kitui South and East are drying up, forcing herds to migrate closer to residential areas and across county borders—movements that historically spike disease transmission. The vaccination campaign acts as a shield, allowing animals to move safely in search of pasture without triggering an epidemic.
As the first needles go in, the eyes of the county are on the skies, waiting for rain. But until the clouds open, the syringe and the medicine cooler are the only weapons standing between Kitui's farmers and total destitution.
