Moses Omondi Okoth has decisively won the Ugunja parliamentary seat, reaffirming the Orange Democratic Movement's dominance in a contest marked by low voter turnout.

Moses Omondi Okoth of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the new Member of Parliament for Ugunja Constituency after securing a commanding victory in the Thursday by-election. Announced at the Ambira High School tallying centre, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Omondi the winner with 9,437 votes.
The result cements ODM's political grip on the region but also raises questions about voter engagement. The poll was triggered after former MP Opiyo Wandayi was appointed to President William Ruto's cabinet as the Energy Secretary. Despite the high stakes, only 15,017 out of 60,114 registered voters participated, a turnout of just under 25%.
Omondi, who previously served as the constituency manager under Wandayi, established a massive lead over his rivals. His closest challenger, Fredrick Ochiel of the United Democratic Movement, finished a distant second with 1,200 votes, while Benson Obol Otieno of the United Green Movement secured 1,171 votes.
The election, which saw 11 candidates cleared to run, was a key test for ODM's influence. In his victory speech, Omondi thanked the voters for their support despite the low participation and pledged to unite the constituency. The IEBC noted that the tallying process was validated by agents from multiple political parties, ensuring a transparent outcome.
Throughout polling day on November 27, IEBC officials noted the slow trickle of voters. Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat had earlier urged residents to come out and vote, assuring them of adequate security and a smooth process. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, after casting his own vote, praised the IEBC for a professionally managed and peaceful exercise.
Wandayi framed the by-election as a crucial indicator for the political landscape ahead of 2027. The results from Ugunja provide ODM a vital win, allowing the party to retain a key seat in its traditional stronghold.
Looking forward, Omondi's immediate challenge will be to address the needs of Ugunja constituents and unite the diverse political voices within the area. His victory, while decisive, occurred against a backdrop of voter apathy that will likely be a point of discussion for all political players in the region.
