NELFUND extends the student loan application deadline to February 27, 2026, offering a critical grace period for thousands of Nigerian students to access interest-free education funding.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has thrown a lifeline to thousands of students, extending the loan application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session to February 27, 2026.
The decision, announced by Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr, is a response to the logistical challenges facing applicants in remote areas. Originally set to close on January 31, the extension is a strategic move to ensure the Tinubu administration’s flagship education policy reaches the grassroots.
"Inclusivity is not just a buzzword for us," Sawyerr stated in Abuja. "We realized that sticking to the January date would lock out eligible students who are struggling with network issues or document verification. We are not here to punish them; we are here to empower them."
While the extension is welcome, it highlights the digital divide plaguing the rollout. Critics argue that an online-only application process disenfranchises the very poor it targets. NELFUND has promised to ramp up sensitization campaigns in rural areas during this grace period.
For the students scrambling to upload their data, the extra month is not just time—it is hope. "This loan is the difference between dropping out and graduating," said one applicant. The clock is ticking again, but this time, the door remains open a little longer.
