Jeff Okello, celebrated for his role as Ninja in Citizen TV's 'Mother-in-Law', has released a vibrant music video for his debut single, 'Leo', blending Kenyan and Finnish creative influences.

A household name known for his long-standing role on one of Kenya's most beloved television shows is stepping into a new spotlight. Jeff Okello, famous for playing the charismatic watchman Ninja on Citizen TV's 'Mother-in-Law', has launched his music career with a debut single and video titled 'Leo'. [1, 2]
This move marks a significant career pivot for the veteran actor, tapping into a different vein of the creative arts to connect with the audience that has watched him for years. The song, 'Leo', which translates to 'Today', is an upbeat track intended to inspire joy and encourage listeners to live in the present moment. [4, 7]
For over a decade, Jeff Okello has been a fixture in Kenyan living rooms. [8] His character, Ninja, became a fan favourite for his memorable antics on 'Mother-in-Law', a weekly family drama that has aired since 2008. [12] Born in Huruma and raised in Kariobangi, Okello honed his craft in theatre before landing his iconic television role. [9] Now based in Finland with his family, his new venture bridges his Kenyan roots with European production. [2, 11]
The song 'Leo' is a collaboration with Finnish producer Vaino Wallenius, merging Kenyan musical styles with Finnish production expertise. [1, 2] In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Okello, who now goes by the stage name Mr. Jeff, revealed the song was actually produced in 2020 but its release was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. [1, 2] "The song was produced in 2020, but my producer said we would not produce it without a video," he explained. [2]
The music video, shot and directed in Finland by Ville Pohjonen, cost approximately KES 450,000 to produce. [3, 7] It features energetic choreography and a celebratory theme, visually echoing the song's uplifting message. [4, 5] In a personal touch, the video also stars Okello's Finnish wife, Katja Maria Huhta, and their children. [7] Okello noted that finding video vixens in Finland was a challenge, which led to his wife stepping into the role. [1] "My wife and family are featured in the song because it is a happy song that brings happy feelings, and I know that my wife and kids are part of the happiness that comes to my life," Okello stated. [7]
He chose to sing in Swahili to connect with his primary fanbase in East Africa. [7] However, he has expressed plans to explore Afro-pop and release music in English and Finnish in the future, signaling his ambition to reach a wider, global audience. [7]
The release of 'Leo' represents not just a personal milestone for Okello but also highlights a growing trend of established Kenyan entertainers diversifying their creative portfolios. As he trades his watchman's uniform for a microphone, his supporters are keenly watching what this next chapter holds. [1]
