A 25-year-old woman has died after being swept into the ocean at a Sydney beach during early New Year’s Day celebrations, casting a sombre shadow over the start of 2026.

While the world watched fireworks and rang in the new year, this tragedy serves as a lethal reminder of the ocean's unpredictability—a warning that resonates deeply with Kenyans currently flocking to Mombasa and Diani for the holiday season.

A Celebration Turned Fatal

Emergency services rushed to Maroubra Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs at approximately 4:00 am (8:00 pm EAT Wednesday) following frantic reports of a person in distress. Witnesses told New South Wales (NSW) Police that the woman was standing near a tidal rock pool when a rogue wave struck.

The impact knocked her off her feet, dragging her into the churning water before subsequent waves swept her further out to sea. A massive search operation was immediately launched, involving:
