Frenchman Julien Mette has officially taken the reins at Tusker FC, immediately conceding the Premier League title while setting his sights on the domestic cup and a podium finish.

The illusion of a miraculous comeback has been definitively shattered at Ruaraka. Newly appointed Tusker FC manager Julien Mette has publicly surrendered the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.
Trailing runaway leaders Gor Mahia by a massive 15 points, Mette’s pragmatism is a stark departure from the usual managerial bravado. His mandate is now strictly damage control: salvaging a respectable top-three finish and securing silverware in the domestic cup to justify his drastic mid-season appointment.
French tactician Julien Mette, who previously managed the Djibouti national team and Rwandan heavyweights Rayon Sports, was drafted in to replace the sacked Charles Okere. Okere’s tenure imploded following a dismal 3-1 defeat to Mathare United, leaving the 12-time champions languishing mid-table with a paltry 28 points. However, Mette’s mission to instantly revitalize the Brewers hit an immediate stumbling block during his debut at the Gusii Stadium.
Facing an energized Shabana FC backed by a vociferous home crowd, Tusker fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat. The solitary goal was a cruel blow—an own goal conceded by defender Thomas Teka, who inadvertently diverted Brian Michira’s cross into his own net. Despite controlling large portions of the match and creating numerous opportunities, Tusker lacked the clinical edge required to salvage a point.
In his post-match address, Mette displayed a refreshing, if brutal, honesty regarding the club’s current trajectory. Rather than offering empty platitudes about fighting until the mathematical end, he definitively ruled out catching Gor Mahia.
“For Tusker, winning the league is over,” Mette stated plainly. “We must do our best to come up in the rankings, finish on the podium, and win the league cup.” This recalibration of expectations is crucial for a dressing room that has appeared paralyzed by the weight of the club’s historic standards.
Despite the result in Kisii, the Frenchman found silver linings in the tactical execution. “It was a cruel loss because of the way we conceded. The opponent had barely a shot on target. I'm happy with the performance from the players even though the result is deeply disappointing,” he noted.
Mette’s project at Ruaraka will heavily depend on integrating the club’s mid-season acquisitions. During the loss to Shabana, three of Mette’s specific signings were unavailable for selection due to fitness and integration issues. Goalkeeper Pavel Ndzila and left-back Servel Akouala were named as unused substitutes, while striker Selasie Bless Akai remained in Nairobi undertaking an intensive gym program.
To navigate the complex political and tactical landscape of Kenyan football, Mette has been paired with former Harambee Stars assistant coach Anthony Kimani. Kimani’s deep knowledge of the domestic league and his tactical acumen are expected to perfectly complement Mette’s broader continental experience.
Meanwhile, across the pitch, Shabana’s manager Peter Okidi is reaping the rewards of a successful transfer window. His mid-season recruits, notably Senegalese winger Pape Doudou Diallo and Congolese forward Mambote Batshi Asis, have instantly elevated the team’s threat level, pushing Shabana further away from the relegation dogfight.
"Rebuilding a dynasty mid-season requires surgery, not bandages; Mette’s brutal honesty is the first cut," observed a veteran football pundit in Nairobi.
