The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a new nationwide program to plant 100,000 tree seedlings by December, engaging communities and schools to help increase Kenya’s forest cover and combat the effects of climate change.
Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has officially launched an ambitious nationwide tree-planting initiative as a core strategy to combat deforestation and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The comprehensive campaign aims to involve schools, community groups, and individual citizens in the planting of at least 100,000 tree seedlings across all counties by the end of the current year.
NEMA Chairperson, Philip Okundi, emphasized that large-scale reforestation and afforestation are crucial components of Kenya’s national climate action goals and its commitment to international environmental agreements. He strongly urged all citizens to actively participate in the campaign and contribute towards meeting the national targets for increasing forest cover. Mr. Okundi highlighted that healthy forests play a vital role in protecting essential water sources, conserving biodiversity, and sequestering carbon dioxide, thereby contributing to both environmental sustainability and community well-being. The initiative will also focus on planting indigenous tree species suitable for different ecological zones.
