The US withdrawal from UN agencies threatens Nairobi’s economy with a KES 45 billion loss, putting the Gigiri diplomatic hub and counter-terrorism funding at risk.

Nairobi’s status as the diplomatic capital of the Global South faces its biggest existential threat in decades. Following President Donald Trump’s shock announcement on January 8 that the US is withdrawing from 66 international organizations, the UNEP and UN-Habitat headquarters in Gigiri are bracing for a financial tsunami.
The withdrawal hits Nairobi particularly hard. The US has historically been the largest donor to these agencies. Experts estimate the direct loss to projects managed from Nairobi could range between $250 million and $350 million (KES 32 billion - KES 45 billion) annually.
The "UN bubble" in Nairobi supports a vast ecosystem of high-end real estate, international schools, and hospitality businesses. A downsizing of UN-Habitat would be catastrophic.
Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei has tried to downplay the crisis, noting that "Kenya will look East" to fill the gap. However, replacing the sheer scale of American funding overnight is a diplomatic impossibility. As the Star-Spangled Banner is lowered in influence, Nairobi must quickly find new patrons or face a dimming of its global shine.
